The variants of hair dyes include Permenant, semi-permenant and temporary.
Permenant as the name implies, lasts longest. When your roots grow out, it will give a regrowth of your natural hair.
Semi permenants gradually fade through washing, but have the benefit of being less harsh on the hair. Also, they'll wash out considerably leaving a minimal to non-existant regrowth. Their downside is that they can only deposit color - meaning you can change your hairs reflect color or darken, but not lighten.
Temporary color only lasts one shampoo where it will completely wash out.
If i wanted a log lasting and natural look, i would choose a semi permenant haircolor in an "ash" (ie ash brown, ash blonde). It will minimise brassy or red undertones that a "natural" colored dye will often induce.
Happy coloring!
